The power of pesticides

by Hezikia

They are the subtle killer of animals even though their main target is bugs.

They are also almost single handedly responsible for the near extinction of the Perigrin falcon in the 1980's.
They are pesticides.

Although rules and regulations have been improved they are still casuing particular damage in other countries who have no alternative to it. Not only are they killing birds but also fish and other marine life when they get sprayed on crops near the ocean. Then marine plants get infected with it which goes onto the fish up the food chain eventually to us. Efforts in other countries are being made to stop this.

Kinetic Sculptures

By Tito the Flying Asian

A European man has blended art and engineering with his kinetic sculptures: art that moves. He bases his creations on animals and he uses no engines or motors. It runs purely on wind and perpetual motion. It took him years to perfect a fluid, stable motion for each of the legs. Sometimes he lets them loose on beaches and with an air powered sensor, they are able to walk freely and avoid water. He makes most of his 'animals' out of plastic piping. In the future this technology could be perfected to create some sort of no pollution, completely free powered transportaion.

Earth Hour

By: Chaaya

Earth hour was March 27, 2010. Everyone in schools, families and communities were asked to join in to help with this world event. This actually was suggested and acreated by the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWN). The time everyone went "lights out" was 8:30 to 9:30 for each timezone. About one billion people unplugged their appliances, and turned off their lights for saving our precious Earth. 126 countries are registered to participate. We as a nation and a world community have overturned expectations when it came to participating in this years Earth hour. So read up on the subject and participate next year. The more people that know about this helpful hand to our home will be able to help educate others on this important topic.

The great ocean garbage dump

by - Hezikia

Do you ever wonder where all the trash in the world goes that is nor recycled and not put into land fills? The answer is that it is all dumped into the ocean. There plastic , which is not bio-degradable just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces. When it gets small enough fish can start eating it, when fish do this it wrecks their digestive system. Other threats are that birds mistake floating bottle caps for food and give that to their young. The trash comes from mostly Asian countries like Japan, Indonesia, and others. But a large portion does come from the United states. It would be impossible to dredge out all of the trash, so the best way to slow it down is to stop it at its source , places where trash gets dupmed into the ocean. There are other sources. For example a Unites States aircraft carrier has enough paper work go through it a year that it is enough to sink the ship. How can you help? Try to recycle more plastic products.

Mercury Poisioning

Today, the natural balance of the oceans' waters is disrupted by our lifestyles. All of our exhaust from factories and cars are not only polluting the air but the oceans. We think this is not affecting anything but it is. It is poisoning the water, which is poisoning the fish in the form of methlymercury, and then it is poisoning us in the form of mercury poisoning.

Mercury is a heavy metal that causes toxic effects when you are exposed to it. These toxic effects include serious damage to the brain, kidney, and lungs that can lead to death. Mercury is now apart of the ocean's water. As the fish live in the toxic water, the mercury stays in their blood. Even if a fish is not infected by the poison, if they eat another fish that is they become infected. As this disease works up the food chain it eventually ends with us.

Many people suffering from mercury poisoning do not know it. If you eat fish on a regular bases, you will most likely have mercury in your blood. This does not mean you have mercury poisoning but you will if you continue to consume infected fish. The only way to stop the wide spread poisoning of mercury is to stop it at the source and clean up the oceans or else it will be to late to stop.

Carbon Footprint

By Xena

Did you know that if you go onto the internet, you can find what exactly what your carbon footprint is. Your carbon footprint is something that allows you to see how much CO2 or carbon dioxide you release into the air. When you calculate your carbon footprint you can see what an average person or family releases into the air, so it can help you improve on reducing the amount of CO2 you put into an air.

It calculates anything from the amount of grain you eat per day, or even how far you drive in your car. Almost anything you can think of that might put more carbon dioxide in the air is on the Carbon Footprint Calculator. You should check is out, so you can see whether or not you really are helping the enviornment go green in your daily life.

Earth Day 2010

by Hezikia

Forty years after the first Earth Day, the world is still at threat from climate change. This year even more effort is being put forth to stop climate change. New energy efficient cars, new energy efficient houses and buisnesses. You can help by trying to save a little energy on side. Turning off lights , or use less water. Not only will you save money you will also help the current economy. The point of the day is not actually to save energy that day but to raise awerness for future generations.
