Drafty Homes?

By mallory coats Is your home drafty? Do you turn up the heat? Is it still cold/wasting energy/wasting money? If you answered yes to this then keep reading. If you answered no then read it anyway. Drafty homes are mainly the cause of bad outside seals or cracks. Heat can escape through these and cold air can come in. This is not energy effiecent . A way to stop this is by sealing these up or you could just turn your heat off and freeze to death.

Plants wasting energy?

By Mallory Coats People are always saying how planting plants is a good thing and that it cleans the air. But have you ever thought that they could be wasting energy? In dry places like Colorado its likely that you are wasting energy in your front yard. When people plant plants that are tropical or not tolerant to dry weather then it takes more water to water them and there is a higher chance that they won't live anyway. So a good way to say energy and water is by planting dry weather tolerant plants. :)

a real workout

By Mallory Coats

Once upon a time there was this guy. You know that one guy with the face? Yeah, that one. Anyway, there is this ocean (the one with water) and its just sitting there. And up on the shore there is a gym for people to work out. Turns out that this gym wastes a lot of energy and isn't very useful. They keep the lights on all day and they pay for electricty for the machines. This gym happens to have a lot of customers and there are people there all day. It takes a lot of electricity to keep a gym open that long. So my idea is, "Why don't we just use the man power from people on the exercise bikes to power the lights?" That way people would get a good work out and save electricity. Their memberships would be cheaper because the gym doesn't have to pay for all that power.

Solar Powered stereo.

By Mallory Coats

During the summer you usually see people working in their yards. Some people think that its a nice thing to have music playing while doing hard work. I agree. Some people try to bring radios out but the house may not have a power outlet on the outside. Others bring battery powered radios but the batteries tend to die really fast. A great solution to this is just to use a solar powered stereo. During the summer there tends to be less clouds and more sunshine. So it all works out in the end. Thats what makes the earth go round. :)

Batteries. Dead batteries. Recycled Batteries.

By Mallory Coats

Most people know why you should recycle batteries but most people dont know how they are recycled.

this is the process broken down so its possible for the average human to understand.

1. the batteries are shipped away.

2. they are heated up so much that the chemicals leak out and the plastic is vaporized.

3. the metal is melted down.

4. then that melted metal becomes a new battery.

Soda kills.

By Mallory Coats

( I still love soda even though I wrote this blog.)

Do people really think about how much they waste when they grab a soda at a gas station? Let's take a journey through time back to last week.

1. There was this little hunk of plastic.

2. A factory used electricity and energy to shape it.

3. It is now a bottle.

4. It is shipped in a truck with a bunch of other bottles to a Soda company.

5. The truck uses fossil fuels to run.

6. When the bottles get to the plant it wastes even more energy to make the soda.

7. Then they put plastic labels on the bottle.

8.Then the little bottle is in another truck.

9.Then, when it finally gets shipped, it sits in a fridge.

10. The fridge uses energy.

11. Then you come along and grab it and pay for it at the cash register.

12. That uses electricity.

13. Then you leave and get in your truck.

14. That uses more energy.

School Is a Waste

By Mallory Coats

A lot of students think that school is a waste of our time. (Ithink so too, but dont get me wrong, we still need it) Anyway school wastes a lot of energy. Like every morning the buses have to take kids who live far away to school. It would just be easier if they built another school that was closer so that they could walk. And Even in the classes at school i use about 5 pieces of paper per class. There is 8 classes so thats 40 pieces. and there are 700 kids im my school so thats 28000 pieces of paper in just one school in one day. Dont get me started on how many schools that there are. All im saying is that we need to change how we teach our students today. Ipads anybody?

Metal

MALLORY COATS

Metal is recycled every day but did you know...

1. you can make 20 cans of recycled metal and only 1 can from new materials.
2. America alone can make an entire air fleet from how much we throw away a month.
3. we use 100 million cans a day.

So does recycling metal save a BUNCH of energy? YES
Should you throw away cans? NO

Paper YAY!!!!!

By Mallory Coats

Hi. paper is recycled every day but did you know?

1.Every year one person uses a 100 foot tree's worth of paper.

2. 1 ton of de inked paper saves 7000 gallons of water.

3. recycling paper saves 75% of air pollution

4. 73% of newspapers are used for more news papers or tissues or they give it to the people in the other countires.

5. 1.5 million tons of paper are used for products each year.

SO IS RECYCLING IMPORATANT TO HUMANITY ? Sure.

Is my blog important to humanity ? Possibly.

I like cans

Mallory Coats

Recycling is a big issue today and one of the major things that get recycled are cans. But there are many things people don't know about these cans.

1. A recycled can will be on a shelf again within 60 days.
2. In the u.s. soda cans are the most recycled item .
3. Recycling one aluminum can, will power a 42 inch tv for three hours.
4. Soda cans use more aluminum than anything else.
5. Since so many of these cans are recycled they count for less than 1% of the U.S. waste.
6. One can that is thrown away wont be decomposed in 500 years.
7. Aluminum cans can be recycled over and over and over and.... again
8. Over 80000000000 cans are used in one year. In only America!
9. Aluminum used to be more valuable than gold.
10. Soda is yummy.

Hand Powered Washing Machine!?

Mallory Coats

IF you're looking for a greener way to wash your clothes then look to the hand powered washing machine. Its about as big as a table lamp and it's portable. What you do is put your water and detergent in with your clothes and turn the hand crank. By doing this it forces the water through the inside to wash the clothes.

So does the hand powered washing machine work? YES!

Is it very big? NO!

Toilets = more freshwater?

Mallory Coats

Huh? Did Ihear you right? Toilets and showers use up most of the freshwater in a household. A single flush uses up to 3 gallons! With this new filtration system you can save 9 times as much water. The water goes into a chlorine filter and into a holding tank to be filtered again. This water is called gray-water. To me it sounds nasty to reuse your pee water for drinking water.

Soooooo cans toilets save water? YES!

Warm your apartment by body heat!

By Mallory Coats

In france there is and underground train with platforms that always seem to be crowded. On top of this subway is an apartment building that they are testing this expiriment on. There Question is " Can the body heat of all those people waiting to get on train and the friction heat coming off the wheels generate enough heat to keep the apartments above 70 degrees F?" The scientists put a contraption on the tracks that uses the friction heat and turns it into electrical power then it travles up to the builing. In the roof of the waiting platforms are vents to let all the body heat rise and make it to the apartment biuling. I wonder what would happen if the subway got closed. Would the people in the apartments freeze?

so, can body heat really keep you warm for the winter? YES

Potatoe Clocks. Do they work?

Mallory Coats

Potatoes cause a chemical reaction when they touch electronic equipment. This causes the electrons to move and the faster they move the more energy can be harnessed. If you hook it up to a clock a burst of energy will go into it and make it go. The energy is continuous. It starts from the potato, goes into the clock, goes through the negative end of the wire and starts all over again. This will keep happening until the potato hits its early stages of rotting. This is because it loses some of its chemicals when it rots. And each day there is less and less energy until the clock comes to a stop.

So can a potato clock work? YES
Is it reliable? NO

Sound Powered phone

Mallory Coats
The problems with phones these days is that they cost too much, need batteries, are a hassle to maintain, and get effected with extreme temperatures. A sound powered phone can turn the sound waves of your voice into energy and can come out the other end of the line. There are no batteries so they are energy efficient and you don't need to charge them. If they get wet, cold or even a wire gets melted they will still work, unlike cellphones. So can voice powered phones really be the future of conversation?

ENERGY EFFICIENT BATHTUBS!? who knew?

Mallory Coats

You know how some metals such as iron feel cold to the touch because they take away body heat? People who have cast iron tubs complain that they are colder than the plastic ones. So in turn they use more heat to heat up the tub and that uses more energy. So what if we insulated the tubs just like we insulate our house to make a more stylish yet more efficient way of bathing? Turns out that the insulation helps the tub keep in more heat. Every time you incease the tempature one degree then it releses 2 extra co2 into the atmosphere. So can a bathtub really save the air from pollution. Yes!
