Most people in their home have motion detecting lights that turn on and off when someone walks by, because it is convient and they are easy to find. But how does that help the enviroment? Because it is saving energy. Even when they are still plugged into there power source it isn't using electricity. Often you forget to shut off the light when you walk down the hallway or out of the garage but with a motion sensor you don't have to worry about it because it will shut off automatically when it doesn't sense motion for a while.
